Downtown (Olympic) Streetcar: Test Runs Begin

It's been some time since I've been able to post.. work and side projects are taking up all my time.

I was riding through SE False Creek and checking the progress of the streetcar, when I noticed it was running - the two trains were running end-to-end.

It was great to see them actually running down the track and stopping at the stations. The track is a single track, with passing sections at the stations. It's unfortunate, but I verified my earlier discovery: that the track only reaches the "Olympic Village" Canada Line station at Cambie - and doesn't run through the Village itself.

SE False Creek Transparency Needed: Tim Stevenson, Oct 16th

In what has quickly replaced the Transit-fine debacle as the largest issue in the civic election (thankfully), the various sides are making their statements and spinning the apparent $100-million loan to Millenium Developments.

Peter Ladner will appear on CBC Radio this morning to explain why in-camera meetings are sometimes important - why the public needn't know when the city decides to loan out a hundred million dollars.
That should be fun.

Millenium Developments to Receive $100-million Loan

A bit of a bombshell dropped this morning: the City of Vancouver is apparently about to loan $100 million to Millenium Developments, the company developing the SE False Creek 'Olympic Village' site.

This comes after everyone at the city was saying the project was fiscally stable, and that the city was not going to be left on the hook for anything.

I found the newly-created peninsula and tidal pool of particular interest. I'd like to know if the waterfront area is actually still city property.. it looks like it has been built by a landscape contractor, but will be run by the city. Just a guess, though.

SE False Creek Olympic Village Over Budget

The Millenium Development Corp's Olympic Village project is facing some serious cost overruns, it seems. Rumours have it the project is already $60 million overbudget, and everyone's wondering who'll be on the hook.

Apparently the city could be responsible for covering the cost, though nobody's certain and council is not talking at the moment.

Sullivan announces "Olympic Streetcar" trial

It has now been publicly announced, and reported in The Vancouver Sun: the current streetcar run down SE False Creek, now using an old Interurban car, will be turned into a new Bombardier-sponsored demonstration streetcar.
