Vancouver's Streetcars on Their Way

It appears Bombardier has shipped the two "Flexity" streetcars to Vancouver, and the local news release brought the local media's attention to the new line once again. The right of way has been rebuilt over the last year, and looks complete (the above photo was taken a few weeks ago). It was great to see Frances Bula's posting on the subject draw a significant amount of discussion.

Translink Looking to Further Increase Security

In an effort to boost security, or at least the appearance of security, Translink is looking to add station attendants and a possible dog-squad to their security forces.

I'm becoming a little concerned with the way Translink police force is quickly becoming its own large force, but the attendants is a great idea.

Light Rail "Could be the smartest" Thing to do: Falcon

In an interview that shows some promise as far as the thoughts and direction of decision-makers, Transportation minister Kevin Falcon is talking about a detailed review of light rail as a possible option for future train lines to UBC and the Fraser Valley.

"Light rail could be the smartest, wisest thing to do," Falcon told Black Press.

Public Transit a Quiet Issue this Election

Transit has just barely been talked about this federal election.. we can only hope it will be more significant in the Vancouver civic election, considering GVRD residents believe public transit is the most needed improvement in the region.

Gateway Project Should Include Fraser Valley Interurban

A story this week in the Vancouver Courier highlights what is missing from the Gateway project: the expansion of public transit.

I'd say the highlight of the article is a discussion about reviving the Interurban lines out to the valley, and that SkyTrain development should cease. Jordan Bateman, a spokesman for Get Moving BC - a citizen's group organized in support of the Gateway project:

Canada Line now spurring evictions

Now that the Canada Line is nearing completion, at least one residential complex along the line is evicting its tenants in what has become a regular event in Vancouver: the evict/renovate/jack the rent cycle. I've lived in one of these buildings at Oak and 14th (now "Coco", some high-end condos).

It's the dark side of the otherwise positive effect a new rail line can have on a neighbourhood. Property values along a new rail line appreciate an average of 10% faster than the rest of a city, and a new line opens all kinds of possibilities for new, dense development.
